Aqualyx™

Aqualyx™ – General risks

General risks:

Any deep injection therapy may result in permanent damage of nervous tissue and nerves, as well as inflammatory reactions and infections that may result in irreversible scarring.

Aqualyx™ – Possible side effects

Possible side effects:

  • Redness of the skin that may become permanent
  • Punctual rigidity or lumps within the tissue
  • Denting of the treated area due to irregular reduction of fat cells
  • Dizziness immediately after the procedure for around 2 hours (please be sure to hydrate by drinking sufficient amount of water)
  • Increased sweating, nausea, diarrhoea (uncommon), intra-cyclic menstrual bleeding (women)
  • Allergic reaction (very uncommon) such as nettle rash, bronchial asthma, symptoms of shock
  • Hyper pigmentation if the treatment areas are exposed to the sun immediately afterwards. (Hyper pigmentation may last up to several months.) To-date there have been no recorded cases of permanent hyper pigmentation
  • Rarely there can be subcutaneous rigidification, where the area becomes rigid due to localised inflammation – this always softens after some weeks.

Aqualyx™ – Follow-up

Follow up and future appointmentsOn average, you will need between 3-5 treatments at 4-6 weekly intervals, all of which will be advised during your free consultation.

Aqualyx™ – Aftercare advice

Aftercare advice for Aqualyx™ treatments:

  • Do not apply cosmetics to the treated area up to 12 hours after the treatment
  • Avoid all sources of heat and radiation (sunlight, saunas etc.,) and severe cold for 7 days
  • Abstain from physical exercise for 7 to 10 days; gentle exercise may be taken as comfortable after 10-14 days (comfort will depend on the area treated and exercise taken)
  • Do not have treatments using laser, cryolipolysis or radio-frequency therapy during your planned Aqualyx treatment process
  • Avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as Nurofen/Ibuprofen for 7 days
  • Drink plenty of water and adhere to a healthy diet.  There is suggestion that following a low fat diet during treatment reduces the work of the liver breaking down free fatty acids.

Aqualyx™ – Expected side effects

Expected side effects after treatment with Aqualyx™:

  • The skin will be red following treatment; this can last from a few hours to a couple of days.
  • Itching and burning sensations as well as a feeling of pressure (pressure sensitivity) are normal reactions to treatment.
Pressure sensitivity may be relieved by applying a pressure garment. Often patients who have their chin treated find that tying a pair of tights around their head at night for the first few days, and sleeping with an extra pillow provides comfort. Likewise tub grip or bandaging around the body area treated often provides relief from pressure related symptoms.
  • Minor to moderate aches and pains may occur.
1000mg Paracetamol may be taken – AVOID taking Aspirin or Nurofen/Ibuprofen as these drugs thin the blood and will enhance bruising
  • Swelling of the treated area is most pronounced at 2-3 days, and some larger areas treated may take a couple of weeks to fully settle. Swelling is a positive sign that the treatment is working.
  • Bruising might develop within the treated area(s), this can be in the form of a haematoma.
  • Some patients have experienced a feeling of numbness to the treated area – specifically when the flanks are treated, it may take a few weeks to months for this to completely resolve

Aqualyx™ – How long will my treatment last?

Aqualyx™ is a permanent treatment where the fat cells are destroyed, so this is a long term solution.

As the fatty acids are converted into energy, it is important that you maintain a strict healthy diet and exercise regime during the treatment process and to retain your desired shape.

Aqualyx™ – How soon will I see results?

Aqualyx is a very effective treatment and a reduction in fat deposits can be seen after just one treatment.

Noticeable changes are normally seen a few weeks after the second treatment.

Depending on the size of the area being treated, it is usually necessary to have 3 to 5 sessions for optimal results. The speed at which improvement is seen will vary, depending on the stability of the cell membranes; younger patients are more likely to see results over a longer period.

Aqualyx™ – After the treatment

As a non-surgical procedure, you can return to most normal daily activities immediately after the Aqualyx™ treatment.

You will experience slight itching, burning and tenderness in the treated area for a few days, but this is a normal response to the treatment and your body will then return to normal.

As with any injectable treatment, bruising may also occur. In cases where larger areas are being injected with higher volumes of solution, you may experience discomfort for 10-14 days.

Aqualyx™ – How many treatments are required?

The number of Aqualyx™ treatments required will vary according to volume of localized fat, the desired degree of correction and the individual’s reaction of the fat tissue.

On average, you should expect 3-6 treatments carried out at 4-8 weekly intervals.

Small areas of localised fat – e.g., chin/jowls – may only require 1-2 treatments.

The following are some general recommendations from experience with the product:

Indication Treatments
Chin 2 – 4
Pre-jowl sulcus 2 – 4
Arm pits 2 – 4
Upper arms 2 – 4
Thoracic rolls 2 – 4
Abdomen 3 – 6
Hips 3 – 6
Saddle bags 3 – 6
Inner thighs 3 – 6
Knees 3 – 6
Lipoma 2 – 4
Aqualyx™ – What is the treatment like?

Aqualyx™ works by melting or liquefying the fat calls, the products of which are naturally removed by your body’s lymphatic system. The Aqualyx™ treatment involves injecting a carefully prepared solution into the fat through a special ultra-fine Aqualyx™ needle. It is typical to inject the solution twice into each area being treated. The volume of solution needed will vary according to the size of the area.

In order to improve patient comfort, local anaesthetic is used before the injections to provide a virtually pain free treatment. Treatment takes approximately 30 minutes, during which time you are likely to notice a warm sensation in the area being injected. Post treatment, it is normal to experience swelling, itching, redness or a burning sensation for 1-3 days in the treated area.

Clare is one of the first fully qualified medical practitioners in the UK who is trained to deliver Aqualyx.

Aqualyx™ – Where can Aqualyx™ be used?

Aqualyx™ was launched in Italy in 2009 and over 2 million treatments have been given to patients across Europe.

It has been shown to be effective in reducing fat deposits all over the body including the following areas:

  • Upper Arms
  • Bra Bulge
  • Stomach
  • Hips (Love Handles)
  • Outer Thighs (Saddle Bags)
  • Under the Buttocks (Banana Folds)
  • Inner Thighs
  • Knee
  • Chin, Jowls
Aqualyx™ – What is Aqualyx™?

Aqualyx™ is a specialised solution of water and plant polymers that is combined with deoxycholic acid, an active substance which dissolves the fat. In liquid form it is easy for the body to naturally remove the fat through the lymphatic system.

Deoxycholic acid is a secondary bile acid that the body produces naturally to aid the digestion of fats. The fat-dissolving effect of this acid was utilised by Professor Motolese, the inventor of Aqualyx™, who developed a synthetically manufactured variant.

When injected into fatty tissue, Aqualyx™ causes destruction of the fat cells, which are then transported to the liver and excreted from the body via the kidneys. It is important to understand that, whilst fat cells are permanently destroyed and your body shape improves, the treatment does not result in weight loss.
