Is your practitioner qualifiedIs your Aesthetic Practitioner qualified?

If you are looking for an accountant or a solicitor, chances are that you will want to make sure that they have the legal or financial qualifications required to meet your specific needs.  So why is this not common practice when we are looking for someone to take care of our skin?  After all, we only get the one body!  It’s not always easy to erase or reverse the mistakes made by inexperienced or unqualified ‘Aesthetic practitioners’ and such mistakes can often have a significant impact on your health and wellbeing.  Currently, the field of non-surgical Aesthetic treatments is almost entirely unregulated and unaccountable, so how can you be sure that your skin is in safe hands when you are looking for an Aesthetic Clinic for a non-surgical cosmetic procedure?

Save Face

An invaluable tool in the quest to find a practitioner you can trust is www.saveface.co.uk – a centralised register of safe, credible and qualified practitioners who have all been visited and objectively assessed by a team of clinically trained and experienced nurses.  The site provides a useful search tool to help you find local accredited clinics and also has a wide range of useful patient ‘factsheets’ about non-surgical cosmetic procedures, helping patients to develop an objective understanding of any treatments that they are interested in.

The importance of a pre-treatment consultation

I cannot stress enough how important pre-treatment consultations are when it comes to finding a practitioner you can trust!  For a start, if you are hoping to undergo wrinkle relaxing treatments using Botulinum Toxin A, you need to be aware that it is a prescription-only medication and should only be prescribed following a face-to-face consultation with a medical practitioner who holds the relevant prescribing qualification.  As a result, anyone offering Wrinkle Relaxing treatments using Botulinum Toxin A without you first having to attend a face-to-face consultation with a qualified medical professional should be avoided at all costs!

Pre-treatment consultations are a great way of finding out more about the clinic and the procedure that you are hoping to undergo.  Is the treatment area clean and appropriate for non-surgical cosmetic treatments? Does your practitioner clearly explain the treatment process, as well as any pre-treatment or aftercare recommendations? Is your practitioner open and honest about their experience and qualifications? Do they ask questions about your medical history to reduce the risk of allergic reactions, etc.?  If you are unsure about anything at all during your pre-treatment consultation, don’t be forced into undergoing a procedure! Successful Aesthetic Procedures require a positive relationship of trust between the practitioner and patient (as well as the necessary qualifications and experience!), so if you don’t feel like your thoughts or concerns have been adequately answered it may be best to find another practitioner.

Appearance Based Medicine, based in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, has been fully accredited by Save Face and awarded ‘Excellence Status’ thanks to more than 50 positive reviews from our customers.  Clare McLoughlin RGN INP, our Aesthetic Nurse Prescriber, is also a member of the Save Face Expert Advisory Board – a team set up to:

  • Undertake periodic audits of the Save Face Scheme and the standards that it sets to ensure that it is fit for purpose and adheres to best practice guidelines and initiatives
  • Help implement a framework that allows for continuous improvement in the identification of issues that can safeguard the consumer.

Clare also holds the Independent Nurse Prescriber qualification, allowing her to prescribe Botulinum Toxin A following a face-to-face consultation with her patients (please note that she will only prescribe this medication if she deems this treatment an appropriate course of action to take given a patient’s skincare needs, medical history and treatment expectations).[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column]
