Causes and treatments for Smile Lines

Smile Lines

What are smile lines?

Smile lines, also known as laughter lines, describe the types of wrinkles that tend to form around the sides of your mouth, however, they can also form on other parts of your face such as around your eyes. These lines tend to be more prominent when you smile, hence their name.

Unfortunately, smile lines appear as a result of the natural ageing process – therefore, for most people, their appearance is inevitable. Most people report that they start seeing these lines form between their 20s and 30s.

What causes smile lines?

When you were younger, you may have noticed that smile lines appeared on your face whenever you smiled or made certain facial expressions. Back then these lines were nothing to worry about, as you knew that as soon as you relaxed your face, these lines would quickly fade away, returning your skin to its natural appearance in an efficient and easy way.

Unfortunately, when we get older, our skin simply struggles to adjust to these changes as well as it used to, primarily due to the decreased amount of collagen and elastin that occurs as a result of the ageing process. However, these lines can form as a result of other factors such as continually exposing your skin to UV rays without protection, your genetic makeup, smoking and other lifestyle choices.

How can smile lines be treated?

If you suffer from prominent smile lines, then you’ll be pleased to know that there are numerous treatment options available to you. However, prior to treatment, we think it is important to discuss their prevention.

Many of the causes of smile or laugh lines can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle choices as a young adult. Simply wearing sunscreen every day, keeping your skin hydrated and maintaining a good diet and exercise routine can go a long way in stopping the formation of these lines.

If you already suffer from smile lines, then you will have your choice of a variety of treatment options. From injectables like Dermal Fillers and Botox® , which offer great results with little downtime, to Laser Treatment or more invasive procedures like a Surgical Facelift.
