‘Ask Clare’ re Microdermabrasion

Question: I’m a little confused about whether or not exfoliation is a good or bad thing! Please help, should I throw away my exfoliating facial scrub or not?!

Clare’s answer:

As we age, not only does skin cell production begin to reduce, but so does our skin’s ability to effectively shed old skin cells.  As a result, the build-up of dead skin cells can leave the skin looking dull and lacklustre.

Regular exfoliation can help to clear these dead skin cells to help reveal the younger, fresher looking skin beneath, but there is a risk of over-scrubbing, which can strip away some of the essential oils from the skin and actually cause more problems than it solves!  In my experience, exfoliation is often best left to the professionals!

Microdermabrasion is the mechanical exfoliation of the skin to remove the build-up of dead skin cells, but it also works to stimulate the fibroblasts deep within the skin to produce new collagen and elastin.  Microdermabrasion treatments take about 30 minutes to carry out, and involve the use of a small, handheld vacuum suction device and very fine abrasive crystals to polish and resurface the skin.

One more facial scrub point before I go! Many exfoliating skincare products contain tiny plastic microbeads that do not degrade and end up polluting our oceans! So why not put that exfoliating scrub back on the shelf and trust an experienced professional to help you exfoliate safely and effectively using Microdermabrasion!
