Causes and treatments for fine lines and wrinkles
Fine lines and wrinkles
What are fine lines and wrinkles?
Fine lines and wrinkles appear on our faces as we age. Fine lines take the form of mild creases in the skin and usually indicate the beginning of your skin’s ageing process. Wrinkles, on the other hand, are fine lines that are deeper, more prominent and usually appear on the faces of older adults.
Ageing is, unfortunately, an inevitable process that is going to affect us all eventually. Most people report that they start to see the formation of fine lines and wrinkles at around the age of 25, however, there is no set time for this change, meaning it could also happen sooner or later.
If you look in the mirror most mornings wishing you could reclaim your long-lost youth, then you’re in the right place. Although the formation of fine lines and wrinkles is an inevitable process, it can be delayed and reduced with the right strategies.
What causes fine lines and wrinkles?
Fine lines and wrinkles form as a result of the continual and often involuntary movements of the face. Every day your face makes countless expressions, from smiling and squinting to frowning and yawning. To create these expressions we need to move our face in certain ways, which is something that we don’t even think about. Over time, these movements will cause creases or folds to appear on the surface of your skin. These will then start to become fine lines and wrinkles as your skin ages.
In your younger years, you’ll find that your skin is able to bounce back from these positions unaffected, primarily due to the amount of collagen and elastin it contains. Unfortunately, as we age, our body produces less of these fibres, and this makes our skin unable to bounce back in the same way it once did.
How can fine lines and wrinkles be treated?
Those who suffer from fine lines and wrinkles are often looking for a way to achieve smoother and more youthful skin. Luckily, there are numerous approaches that can be taken to treat these characteristics, from lifestyle adjustments to medical-grade skincare.
However, if you are looking for a more permanent and effective treatment, then here at Appearance Based Medicine we would recommend a form of injectable such as our Botulinum Toxin or Dermal Filler treatments.
Botox® & Bocouture®
Botulinum toxin (Botox® , Bocouture®, Azzalure®,) can help reduce the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the muscles that are responsible for the formation of these features in the first place. This relaxes your muscles and smoothes out wrinkles, thus helping you to achieve a more youthful appearance.
Dermal Fillers, however, contain ingredients that add volume and fullness to targeted regions of your face, plumping your skin and helping to smooth out the deepest of fine lines and wrinkles.
