Microdermabrasion Treatment

What exactly is this treatment?

A Microdermabrasion Treatment involves the mechanical exfoliation of the skin to remove the upper layers (Stratum Corneum) in order to produce a refreshed and renewed appearance.

Why should I have this treatment?

As we age, not only does skin cell production begin to reduce, but so does the skin’s ability to effectively shed these old skin cells. As a result, the build-up of dead skin cells can leave skin looking dull and lacklustre. A Microdermabrasion Treatment helps to clear away the top layer of old skin to reveal the younger, fresher looking skin beneath, as well as stimulating the fibroblasts deep within the skin to produce new collagen and elastin.

How do I know if this treatment is safe and right for me?

m2-microdermabrasionAt Appearance Based Medicine Ltd., Clare McLoughlin RGN INP will only carry out a non-surgical aesthetic procedure following a detailed one-to-one consultation with a patient, enabling her to accurately assess whether a treatment is appropriate given a patient’s unique medical history, skin condition and expectations.

During your consultation, you will be given comprehensive information about the procedure, potential side effects and any pre- and post-treatment advice. You will also be given the time to decide whether or not, given the information you have received, you would like to proceed with any recommended procedure.

There is an extremely low risk of any side effects occurring during or post-Microdermabrasion treatment. For the majority of individuals, the most that they experience is mild redness that can last between 30 minutes and 12 hours after the Microdermabrasion treatment takes place, depending on the aggressiveness of the treatment, and in the vast majority of cases, this redness will settle down naturally.

What happens during a treatment?

Microdermabrasion treatments take about 30 minutes to carry out, and involve the use of a small, handheld vacuum suction device and very fine abrasive crystals to polish and resurface the skin. It is like an accelerated exfoliation, helping to promote the production of collagen and elastin and speed up cell production.

After any ‘resurfacing’ cosmetic treatment, including Microdermabrasion, it is possible that your skin could feel quite tight or sensitive for a short time whilst you recover fully from treatment. However, Microdermabrasion is a treatment that requires no ‘downtime’, so you can be back at work or carrying out your daily duties as normal as soon as you leave the clinic.

At Appearance Based Medicine Ltd., we often use Microdermabrasion in conjunction with other treatments (like our Fire and Ice Medical Facial and Perfect Peel) to improve the efficacy of the treatment. This is due to the fact that by clearing away the ‘barrier’ of old skin cells from your skin, topical treatments like iS Clinical’s Fire and Ice Facial are able to more efficiently penetrate skin’s pores and do their magic!
