Although I know that not everyone has the time to dedicate to a comprehensive and intensive skincare regime of careful and gentle cleansing and moisturising and regular treatments, it’s surprising the number of people that I meet who admit that they either wash their face with soap (argh!!!) and water, or don’t even wash it at all!

Let’s start with the evils of a household bar of soap to cleanse your face; the alkaline pH of the soap can negatively impact on ‘the bacterial flora and the activity of enzymes in the upper epidermis, which have an acid pH optimum’[1].  Soap can strip essential and natural oils out of the skin, making it dry and removing the protective barrier that protects the skin from from toxins and irritants.  That ‘squeaky clean’ feeling of tight and uncomfortable skin might be a standard part of your night-time routine, but it could be wreaking havoc on your sensitive skin.

However, inaction isn’t always better than the wrong action! It’s always best to try and remove your make-up before you go to bed (just not with a bar of soap!), as make-up and a general build up the grease and grime that we are faced with on a daily basis can clog your pores, also leading to break outs of spots and irritating the skin.  Mascara-caked eyelashes can also become brittle and dry if you don’t remove your eye-make up effectively overnight.

If you aren’t sure what products are better than relying on a harsh soap or water, here are my top make-up removal tips to help make your skincare regime a ‘treat’ (rather than a horror story) this Autumn:

CLEANSE: Our skin is unique, and there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ cleanser out there, unfortunately! For this reason, it is important that you choose an appropriate cleanser for your skin type – some can be quite harsh and dry out your skin, so you may find a sensitive brand works better as a cleanser for you.  At Appearance Based Medicine, we often recommend iS Clinical’s Cleansing Complexhttps://www.ab-med.co.uk/store/is-clinical-skincare/cleansing-complex/ – which contains a range of bio-nutrients, anti-oxidants and mild resurfacing ingredients that work together to effectively and thoroughly cleanse the surface and the pores of the skin without stripping essential natural oils from it.  If your current cleanser isn’t working for you, this innovative cleansing liquid definitely will!

TAKE CARE OF YOUR EYES: Use a dedicated eye make-up remover to clear dirt and product away from the delicate eye area.  Cleanse gently, using a circular motion, and don’t pull at the skin – the eyes are so easily irritated, and will end up looking puffy and tired if you vigorously rub them to remove heavy make-up.  It’s always best to use a moisturiser specifically formulated for this area too to ensure that you see the best results – why not try iS Clinical’s Youth Eye Complex? (https://www.ab-med.co.uk/store/is-clinical-skincare/youth-eye-complex/)

MOISTURISE: Finish your skincare routine by massaging moisturiser into your face (like iS Clinical’s Moisturising Complex – https://www.ab-med.co.uk/store/is-clinical-skincare/moisturising-complex/ ).  A good moisturiser will help to restore the skin’s protective layer after gentle cleansing, and can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  If your skin has additional requirements, the addition of a serum into your daily skincare routine could also be beneficial.

An effective skincare regime doesn’t have to take hours out of your day, but it does rely on good quality skincare products being applied correctly to your skin.  If you are looking to upgrade your own skincare regime, but aren’t sure where to start, why not get in touch and book a consultation with us?
