As the weather begins to get warmer, most of us might be thinking about making changes to both our wardrobes and our skincare routines. With regards to the former, there are many clothes that we may wish to wear in sunnier conditions but may choose not to because of certain imperfections. Spider veins, especially when located on the legs, can lead to significant self-consciousness and leave us unable to celebrate who we are. Sclerotherapy for spider veins at Appearance Based Medicine is the perfect solution.

What Are Spider Veins?

Also known as thread veins, spider veins are twisted blood vessels that can be seen through the skin. They are often red, blue or purple and take their name from their resemblance to spider’s webs.

Spider veins on the legs are the result of damage over time. They occur when the valves inside our veins weaken and can no longer push blood back to the heart. The web-like patterns of spider veins are created when blood accumulates in these veins.

Am I At Risk Of Developing Spider Veins?

There are several risk factors involved in the development of spider veins. As well as being influenced by genetics, their appearance can also be brought on by pregnancy, old age, being overweight and sitting down for long periods of time on a regular basis.

Women also tend to suffer with spider veins more than men, possibly because of the role that oestrogen can play in diminishing the strength of the valves located in the veins.

Choose Sclerotherapy For Spider Veins

At Appearance Based Medicine, I offer sclerotherapy for spider veins. This involves injecting a solution, known as a sclerosant, into the veins in question with a fine needle. The solution will then irritate the vein walls before causing them to collapse and stick together.

In use since the 1930s, the end result of sclerotherapy for spider veins is to reduce the visibility of these prominent blood vessels and turn them into scar tissue. This will then fade over time.

On the whole, sclerotherapy is incredibly safe and will not be advised if I do not feel this will be beneficial to you. Although risks are minimal, temporary side effects may include redness, itching, bruising or welts. These things will usually subside within a few weeks.

Am I Suitable For Sclerotherapy?

As with every treatment at Appearance Based Medicine, sclerotherapy for spider veins will only be performed following a thorough pre-treatment consultation and skin analysis. If your medical history precludes you from treatment, I will be happy to offer an alternative.

Once you embark on your treatment journey, you should be aware that it may take multiple sessions to achieve your desired outcomes. In most instances, patients should wear compression tights or stockings to aid results and will be given comprehensive aftercare advice. It is also entirely normal for the positive effects of sclerotherapy for spider veins to become visible after a period of 12 weeks.
