Although summer still has a long way to go, I’m sure your thoughts have already begun to turn to autumn and all the changes it will bring. Some of you may have even taken solace in the idea of wrapping up again, if only to shelter your thread veins from the prying eyes of the world.  Luckily, with thread vein treatment at Appearance Based Medicine, Marlow, I can provide two unique solutions to this common skin concern. Find out more about thread veins and how they can be tackled below.

What Are Thread Veins?

Usually purple, blue or red in colour, thread veins can develop on the face or the legs. They are informally known as spider veins, due to their web-like appearance, and are a source of much distress to those they affect.

Most often, the thread veins that become visible on the legs form as a result of damaged valves inside the vein. When these valves weaken, blood will struggle to travel all the way to the heart, and will begin to pool in the legs instead. Over time, this will manifest as a thread vein.

Facial thread veins tend to occur as a side effect of sun damage, hormonal changes, environmental factors or excessive alcohol intake.

How Can Thread Veins Be Treated?

At Appearance Based Medicine, Marlow, you can take advantage of either sclerotherapy or short wave diathermy for the treatment of your thread veins.

Sclerotherapy is a procedure that involves the injection of a “sclerosant” (a specialised solution) into the offending veins in order to close them. This triggers a healing process in which thread veins are absorbed into the body and fade dramatically. With sclerotherapy, patients can expect a 40-80% improvement in the visibility of their thread veins, but multiple sessions may be required for optimal results. Sclerotherapy is effective in the management of leg-based thread veins.

Short wave diathermy is used to tackle facial thread veins and relies on advanced technology to restore a blemish-free complexion. By sending a high-frequency electrical current directly through these unsightly veins, short wave diathermy forces individual veins to seal themselves before they are absorbed by the body.
